Feeding Recommendations
Central to the natural style of pet care is acknowledging that every pet
is unique. Like people, dogs vary in how they process and metabolize food
and some may have allergies or sensitivities. Your dog's age, temperament
and lifestyle also affect the kind of nutrition and how many calories he
or she will burn in a day. Puppies eat more per body weight than adult
dogs. A herding dog who runs in the fields for 12 hours or a performance
dog who trains an hour a day and competes every weekend will burn more
calories and have different nutritional needs than a stay at home dog who
sleeps on the couch and gets three 15 minute walks a day.
For starters, try feeding between 2 and 3 % of your adult dog's "ideal weight." By
paying attention to how your dog looks and acts, you will be able to fine tune
the amount and type of food that will nourish him or her best. |
